It’s in a strip mall in a developing upscale neighborhood & warehouse businesses. Besides the newspaper, what else can I do? When people do come in, I’m highly praised for the food. Yet, the place is empty in the p.m. The decor is modern. I also get compliments on it.

Do you want your restaurant to attract "upscale" customers in keeping with the neighborhood (and your highly-praised food)? If so, don’t do coupons, don’t do 2-for-1 deals, don’t do any kind of food discounts at all. To do so gives the impression that you are going for the bargain-hunter customers and that can be the death of an upscale or "boutique" (one-of-a-kind) type of restaurant. Once you start with the discounting, the people who eat out based on that will continue to expect it. That kind of customer is notoriously fickle and disloyal. They’re looking for a bargain, not for great food in an up-and-coming neighborhood.

If you want to run on that treadmill, then use that technique. If, on the other hand, you want to attract consistent, loyal customers who like good food in an interesting neighborhood you need word of mouth, plus some reminders for the kinds of customers you want. Having a happy hour (if you have a bar) can’t hurt at all; just make it something really nice, not a cheap-beer free for all.

Restaurants can take years to become established, so you do need to be patient. But in the meantime, make sure everyone in the neighborhood knows you’re there – not with discounts, but with signage, simple ads in local publications (not just citywide papers), and by hosting events and/or live music. Be sure that the local restaurant critics (print, radio, AND TV) and alternative media know that you exist (many cities have papers other than the big dailies, plus "local-flavor" magazines). You don’t have to take out an ad to do this. Send them a press release about an event or any small change in your restaurant – it’s their job to keep track of things like this. Be sure you get your name in the balloting for "best of" competitions – many cities of all sizes have them.

Be sure that you personally talk to your customers about the business and listen to their ideas as well. They are your best marketing by far – the better you treat them, the faster you will get more customers. And listen to them about the menu and the pricing. Get to know the customers who have lots of experience in the restaurants in your city and in your neighborhood – they can give you invaluable insight into all kinds of things.

One last thing – it never ceases to amaze me how many restaurant owners lose track of their business by putting other people in charge. You personally have to be there as many hours as humanly possible until you are getting the kind of business you want. You are going to have to listen and adapt and adapt again to be able to make it – to do that you personally have to be in that place to know how to adapt. If you’re already doing that, you’re way ahead of many other restaurants and you’re doing something that has led many restaurants toward success.

My husband and I are moving to Chicago this summer. We come from Ohio and this will be a big change for us. We are so overwhelmed with the apartment search. We honestly don’t know where to begin. We are looking for a safe and semi-quiet neighborhood where it’s easy walking distance to grocery stores, shops, restaurants, coffeehouses, etc. We don’t drink so bars are not needed. We’d like to live in a more "family-oriented" neighborhood since we plan on starting a family in a few years. Any help would be great because this search is so overhwleming!

As half of a young married couple myself, I’d say Lincoln Square or someplace around the Southport Corridor. Both are on the North Side of the city. Lincoln Square is a little further north and a little bit west. Both have cute shops and restaurants. There are also a good number of families in both areas. The Southport Corrider is technically part of Lakeview but it’s one of the tamer sections (as opposed to Wrigleyville).

I’d also suggest Andersonville for all the reasons the other posters have mentioned. It’s actually pretty close to Southport and Lincoln Square so you can’t go wrong with either of the neighborhoods.

Single family houses in all three neighborhoods are relatively expensive (starting at $800k) but you can find a 3 bedroom for around $450-$500k.

They are brothers. They are just about 8 and 11 yrs old boys. They always come to the restaurant that I work, and start screaming, throwing rocks and saying any kind of bad words (that you cannot imagine in their age, they can say such a bad words) , and run away. And then come again and do the same. They do daily. What should I do with them?. Should I call police and talk to their parents?. I tried to talk to them but they always say their parents are a**. For me they just need some ear picking but of course I will have more troubles to do so. Can I call police for this matter?

Talk to the parents – tell them exactly what their sons are doing. You might even want to videotape their antics to show to the parents – just in case they start saying "my little darlings would never do something like this"

I would tell the parents that unless they are accompanied by an adult, the kids are no longer welcome in the restaurant. I would also tell the parents that it is up to them to enforce this.

Then I would mention to the parents that the next time their sons come into the restaurant unaccompanied and out of control, the police will be called.

Hopefully after meeting with the parents, you can come to some understanding. They might not even be aware what they’re kids are doing. But you should give them a chance, as parents, to correct the behavior of their kids.

But – if the parents don’t care or are in denial, you have spelled out the steps you are willing to take and the consequences if the two kids don’t knock it off.

Before you have this talk with the parents, you might want to pay a visit to the nearest police barracks and seek their opinion. They may have other ideas, too.

Good luck!

I don’t care at all about sightseeing, but want a neighborhood that has cool restaurants, nightlife, and is convenient in terms of mass transportation, and relatively centrally located since I’ll be meeting up with friends for dinner, drinks and brunch. Kind of like the equivalent of Union Square / East Village or Chelsea / Meatpacking in Manhattan in terms of location and feel.

River North hands down. I live River North and I have about 400 restaurants/bars/nightclubs within a 6 block radius.. Check out this guide, it is broke down into neighborhoods. http://chicagolife.uchicago.edu/city/chi_attractions.shtml

My favorite places to go out during the weekend and week are: Vision nightclub, Sound Bar, Rockit Bar and Grill, LaSalle Power Company, English and Hard Rock Cafe.

Chinatown is a unique neighborhood in that it is more than simply a collection of restaurants, shops and homes. It is a microcosm of Chinese culture here in America. Restaurants in Chinatown serve almost every type of Southeast and Far East Asian cuisine. The first immigrants to Chinatown opened restaurants, and some of these are still around; in this neighborhood, food is taken very seriously and there is something for everyone. For general Chinese food, try Three Happiness, Phoenix or Dragon Court Restaurant. Several restaurants boast cuisine of a specific country; Penang serves Malaysian fare, Hing Kee Restaurant and The Noodle both serve Vietnamese and The Moon Palace Restaurant serves Mandarin meals.
