What are the best neighborhoods to live at in Chicago?

Posted by admin on August 15th, 2011 and filed under neighborhoods | 4 Comments »

I am planning on moving to Chicago HOPEFULLY sometime next Spring and I was wondering what are the best neighborhoods in Chicago for someone in their mid-late 20’s? I will not have a car so somewhere central is a must (I would LOVE someplace that is bicycle friendly). Thanks!

rogers park is a dump and very high crime, I wouldn’t recommend it

stay away from the south side, such as bronzeville south and anything west of western avenue

the best places are Lincoln Park, Old Town, Uptown, Lakeview, Andersonville, Edgewater, the Loop and Wrigleyville…but they are also very expensive.

Everywhere in Chicago is linked by transit and you can bring your bike on the EL and the buses have racks for them, your bike cannot ride the EL during rush hour…

Budlong woods isn’t horrible for someone starting out in Chicago who is young, it’s close the the brown line too =)

What are some safe neighborhoods in downtown Toronto?

I will be moving there for school in about a year. But I’d love to rent an apartment in an area which is not near any dangerous neighborhoods. Also, if somebody could let me know of the areas I should definitely stay away from, that will be very helpful as well.

Thank you.

Toronto is generally a very safe city and does not have any of the ghettos other places have. There really is no area of TO I would not walk through myself.

To live, I personally would avoid the Jane/Finch corridor, Parkdale can be a bit iffy – but more with respect to the ”colourful” characters hanging out than any real danger, and ditto for Regent Park.

Other than that, at night it’s just a matter of being aware of your surroundings. Toronto is very safe, but like any other big city, it has its share of potential trouble.

How come tornados dont go into black neighborhoods?

Posted by admin on May 1st, 2011 and filed under neighborhoods | 20 Comments »

Everytime they call for a tornado warning, it is always out in the white neighborhoods and they have so much damage to the homes and even the cars in the driveway. But a tornado never goes into the inner city black neighborhoods. Or even the projects. Why is this?

Staten is back lol, why arent you talking about what white people do on the bus?

What are some neighborhoods of chicago that are nice to live?

I want to buy a condo. My budget is going to be 250,000. I can’t afford to live downtown obviously but I want a nice young fun neighborhood that has close cta train access and some local restaurants and bars. I would also like some place that parking isn’t insane. Also a safe neighborhood. Please recommend some nice neighborhoods.

Lakeview, Wicker Park…

Are there any good neighborhoods or parks for bike riding in Los Angeles?

I’ve checked out some bike paths and usually they are not too scenic and they are usually next to the freeway. Does anyone know any scenic, quiet neighborhoods or parks with a bicycle path or track for bike riding?

Scheesch, Los Angeles has bike paths for a million miles along the ocean……

My fiance and I are planning to move to Oahu and we don’t want to end up in a bad neighborhood. What are the neighborhoods to avoid and which are safe? Please give specific names. Mahalo!

Kalihi,Waipahu,Waimanalo.
In general, the Westside (although beautiful, but not so safe): Nanakuli, Waianae, Makaha.

In general, the places I mentioned are kinda ghetto, so the point is to stay away from ghetto places.

Why are historically black neighborhoods which were once prominent in decline?

Posted by admin on January 22nd, 2011 and filed under neighborhoods | 3 Comments »

There are historically black neighborhoods in the US that were once self-sufficient prosperous communities. After the Civil Rights Movement, it seems, they began to, and still are in, decline. What on earth happened to cause this?

The Civil Rights movement caused this, along with the improved road system which lead to the sprawl of suburbia. Historically black neighborhoods thrived because segregation created business opportunities for African-Americans without challenge from white business owners. As the country became desegregated the walls came down providing African-American entrepreneurs chances outside those traditionally black neighborhoods, and others outside the black community opportunities to enter those markets.

The price of progress. So probably not a bad trade-off all in all.

Anyone know what neighborhoods in Paris are the nicest to raise a family?

Posted by admin on January 20th, 2011 and filed under neighborhoods | 2 Comments »

My husband and I are looking to relocate to Paris, or the outskirts of Paris, and I am unfamiliar of what neighborhoods are the best for raising a family, and a safe, hip enviroment. We have a 1 year old little girl and I want to provide her with the best neighborhood possible, so could someone familiar with the area tell me of some great places for families?

Paris is like all capitals. It has extremely expensive properties in the middle of the city and a variety of suburbs which range from desirable middle-class area where properties are expensive like Neuilly, to poor down-at-heel areas like Saint-Denis or Clichy-sous-bois where poor immigrants have conglomerated and where there were serious riots four years ago when the police was attacked with petrol bombs and cars were set on fire.
Accommodation is very expensive. To rent you have to think of 1 200 Euros a month for something decent like a small studio apartment. To buy a small house in a quiet area like Menilmontant, with living, dining -kitchen, three bedrooms and a bathroom, a tiny attic, a cellar and a small back garden, the price is over 910.000 Euros.

Having said all this, before even looking at properties near Paris, you should investigate if you can move to France where immigration laws are now those of the Schengen zone. Basically any person from a country outside the Schengen zone is not allowed to move there for a period exceeding 90 days unless they have been granted a long stay visa. They must also obtain a work permit and a living permit. These are now rarely given, unless you have outstanding qualifications or have been offered a job there by an organisation that can justify not employing someone from the EU, for instance working at the American embassy, or teaching a very specialised subject in a university.
You can check all the information about living and working in France on the following website:

What are some safe neighborhoods within 5-10 miles from downtown Portland?

Posted by admin on January 15th, 2011 and filed under neighborhoods | 5 Comments »

Hi,
I will be relocating to Portland and wanted to know from people who actually live here where the safe neighborhoods are? I’d like to be within 5-10 miles from downtown and close to the MAX or bus. I’d initially be looking to rent. Thanks!

The crime map tool is at http://www.portlandmaps.com/maps/police/detail.cfm?action=Explorer&ZoomLevel=2&x=7655000&y=680000 Besides being zoomable, there is a drop down box for selecting the types of crime. If you have Google Earth, there is an icon to activate that at the bottom left.

Being near Max and in a low crime area limits you to the west hills and near 217 & US 26. Most other close-to-max locations have elevated crime.

However, you should check the numbers—There is little crime compared to somewhere like Los Angeles or Newark.
