Are there any nice neighborhoods in Oakland?

I’m planning to move to the bay area soon, and I am looking into Oakland due to my budget. I know the bad rep it gets, but are there any nice, clean, safe neighborhoods to live? I am a mid 20 something female with a small dog. I won’t have a car, so I need to find a neighborhood that I can *safely* get around on foot – to grocery stores, restaurants, cafes, etc., and that is close to the Bart, etc.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Wow, so many helpful answers.

The problem is I don’t know how much you can spend, in the nicer neighborhoods even a one bedroom is about 1,000-1,400. The thing with Oakland is to get into a "safe" neighborhood you’ve got to be able to drop cash. The rent is also going to be higher because you’ve got a dog with you.

One neighborhood that’s really nice and pedestrian friendly is Rockridge. I used to go to school in the area and it was always very safe and there’s a BART station right across the street from a middle school. It had a lot of shops and places to hang out.

Craigslist is a good site to feel out how much certain places are, I’ve included the link below pointing you to the list of places in the Rockridge that accept pets.

Yeah, there are a few… Rockridge, Piedmont for example… but they’re abut as expensive as a decent place in San Francisco.

Their are some nicer places, but unfortunately they are also much more expensive. You can try the area around Lake Merit and you may find a decent deal.
